Handmade Moroccan Rugs – The Complete Guide | Amana Rugs
If you're looking for a handmade Moroccan rug that carries real history, real craft, and real soul — you've come to the right place. At Amana Rugs, every piece is woven by hand in Morocco, made from 100% natural sheep wool, and dyed with plant-based and mineral pigments passed down through generations of Berber women.
We work directly with three women's cooperatives across different regions of Morocco. Each cooperative specialises in distinct weaving traditions — because in Morocco, aesthetics are deeply tied to geography. A Beni Mrirt rug comes from the Middle Atlas highlands. An Azilal rug carries the visual language of the High Atlas valleys. This is why our collection is so varied: we don't source from one place. We source from the people who actually carry these traditions.
This guide will help you understand what makes an authentic Moroccan rug, how to choose the right one for your home, what you should expect to pay — and why these textiles are unlike anything mass-produced.
What Is a Moroccan Rug?
A Moroccan rug — also called a Berber rug — is a hand-woven textile originating from the indigenous Amazigh (Berber) people of Morocco. These rugs have been made for centuries across the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, and the valleys of rural Morocco.
Each tribe and region produces a distinct style. The patterns, knot density, wool texture, and colour palette all tell a story — about the land, the women who wove it, and the symbols they carry. Unlike machine-made rugs, no two authentic Moroccan rugs are ever identical.
Think of it this way: you wouldn't hang a mass-printed poster on your wall when you could have an original artwork. A Moroccan rug is the same logic — applied to your floor. It's not decoration. It's a piece with a story, a maker, and a life of its own.
Types of Moroccan Rugs We Carry
Beni Mrirt Rugs
Beni Mrirt rugs come from the Middle Atlas region of Morocco, near the city of Khenifra — woven by our cooperative partners in that highland area. They are known for their exceptionally dense, high-pile wool — soft, thick, and almost cloud-like underfoot. The wool comes from sheep that graze at altitude, making it naturally stronger and warmer than lowland wool.
Beni Mrirt rugs typically feature geometric or abstract patterns in neutral tones — cream, ivory, camel, and soft earth colours. They are ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and minimalist interiors. Our Beni Mrirt collection includes pieces like Coffee, Honey, Maze, Tanger, and Peach — each a unique, one-of-a-kind work.
Azilal Rugs
Azilal rugs come from the High Atlas valleys — a completely different region, and a completely different visual world. Where Beni Mrirt tends toward neutral minimalism, Azilal embraces colour: pinks, reds, saffron yellows, geometric bursts. Woven by our second cooperative partner, these rugs are bolder, more expressive, and often more personal — the symbols woven into them are drawn from the weaver's own life and story.
Flat-Weave Rugs (Kilim-style)
Our flat-weave pieces — like Latte and White — are woven without pile, creating a lighter, more graphic textile. These rugs suit modern, Scandinavian, and boho-minimalist interiors. They're easier to clean and work beautifully in high-traffic areas or layered over other rugs.
Tribal & Boho Rugs
Pieces like Berber, Boho, Fluffy, and Memphis draw on a wider range of regional Moroccan traditions. Characterised by bold geometric patterns, varied textures, and expressive colour combinations, these rugs make a strong design statement in any room.
Custom & Pre-Order Rugs
Can't find exactly the right size or colour? We work directly with our artisan cooperatives to create custom Moroccan rugs made to order. You choose the dimensions, colour palette, and pattern direction — our weavers do the rest. Custom pieces take approximately 10 weeks to complete. We also work with interior designers and architects on project-based orders.
How Are Authentic Moroccan Rugs Made?
The making of a genuine Moroccan rug is a weeks-long, entirely manual process. Here's what goes into every piece we sell:
1. Wool Sourcing
We use 100% natural sheep wool sourced from local Moroccan farmers. The wool is sheared by hand, washed, and dried naturally. No synthetic fibres, no blends. This is the detail that separates a real Moroccan rug from the polyester imitations sold by mass-market retailers — and it's the difference you will feel under your feet every single day.
2. Natural Dyeing
Colours come from plant-based and mineral pigments — indigo, saffron, pomegranate skin, henna, and local clays. This is the same dyeing tradition practised for centuries. Natural dyes age beautifully and develop a patina over time, rather than fading flat the way synthetic dyes do.
3. Hand-Weaving on a Loom
Each rug is woven on a traditional vertical or horizontal loom, knot by knot. A high-quality Beni Mrirt rug contains between 60,000 and 100,000 knots per square metre. A single rug of 150×250 cm can take 4–8 weeks to complete, depending on the complexity of the pattern.
4. Finishing
After weaving, the rug is hand-sheared to create an even pile surface, then washed and dried in the open Moroccan air. This final washing gives the rug its characteristic softness and sets the natural dyes.
The Women Behind the Rugs
At the heart of Amana Rugs is a commitment to ethical craft. All our rugs are made in women's cooperatives across Morocco — small, community-based workshops where weaving is both a livelihood and a cultural inheritance.
We currently work with three cooperatives in different regions of Morocco. This matters: each region has its own weaving tradition, its own visual vocabulary, its own materials. By working with multiple cooperatives, we are able to offer genuine diversity — not just in pattern, but in technique, texture, and story.
These women are not factory workers. They are artists. Weaving is passed from mother to daughter, from grandmother to granddaughter. The geometric symbols woven into the rugs are a silent language — encoding stories of fertility, protection, nature, and memory.
When you buy an Amana rug, you are directly supporting these communities and the continuation of a craft that has existed for over a thousand years.
Authentic Moroccan Rugs vs. Mass-Market Alternatives
Not all "Moroccan-style" rugs are created equal. Here's what separates an authentic handmade piece from what you'll find on Rug Vista, in IKEA, or from generic online marketplaces:
| Amana Rugs | Mass-market "Moroccan" rugs | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | 100% natural sheep wool | Polypropylene, polyester, synthetic blends |
| Production | Hand-woven, weeks per piece | Machine-made, minutes per piece |
| Dyes | Natural plant & mineral pigments | Synthetic chemical dyes |
| Origin | Made in Morocco by Berber weavers | Made in factories in Asia or Eastern Europe |
| Uniqueness | Every piece is one-of-a-kind | Thousands of identical copies |
| Ageing | Develops patina, softens beautifully | Fades, pills, degrades |
| Price (Poland) | 1,500–7,000 PLN depending on size | 200–800 PLN |
The price difference is real. So is the difference in what you're buying. A machine-made rug is a product. A handmade Moroccan rug is an object with a story — something you'll keep for decades, not replace every few years.
Other Polish retailers like Berbere or Warda Souk also sell Moroccan-inspired pieces. What sets Amana apart is direct sourcing from three regional cooperatives, full traceability, and a personal relationship with the weavers themselves. We visit our partners in Morocco. We know who made your rug.
How to Choose the Right Moroccan Rug for Your Home
By Room
Living room: Go for a large format (160×250 cm or bigger). A Beni Mrirt or Boho-style rug works beautifully as a centrepiece under a coffee table.
Bedroom: A softer, high-pile Beni Mrirt placed beside or under the bed creates warmth and texture. Neutral tones like Latte or White keep the space calm.
Dining room: A flat-weave rug is more practical here — easier to clean and more resistant to chair movement.
Home office / study: A smaller rug (100×150 cm) adds character without overwhelming the space.
Rental apartments & Airbnb: As one of our customers notes, these rugs hold up beautifully in high-traffic rental environments — and they photograph exceptionally well.
By Interior Style
- Minimalist / Japandi: Flat-weave, neutral tones — Latte, White 🔗
- Boho / eclectic: High-pile with geometric patterns — Boho, Berber, Fluffy 🔗
- Modern / contemporary: Clean geometric Beni Mrirt — Coffee, Maze, Tanger 🔗
- Warm / cosy / hygge: Dense pile in warm earth tones — Honey, Peach, Latte 🔗
- Bold / statement: Azilal with expressive colour — our most striking pieces - Berber 🔗
By Size & Price
The most common mistake when buying a rug is going too small. For a living room seating area, the rug should ideally fit under the front legs of all sofas — or even the entire furniture grouping. When in doubt, go one size up.
Approximate pricing (PLN):
- Small rugs (approx. 100×150 cm): 1,500–3,000 PLN
- Medium rugs (approx. 150×220 cm): 3,500–5,000 PLN
- Large rugs (approx. 200×300 cm and above): 4,500–7,000 PLN
- Custom orders (any size): from 1,000 PLN per m²
All prices reflect 100% natural wool, hand-woven production, and direct sourcing. We do not sell machine-made rugs.

To kawałki wnętrza, które po prostu działają. Ogromne podziękowania dla Gabi — doradziła, dopasowała, a kiedy potrzebowałem konkretnego wzoru, po prostu go sprowadziła."

How to Care for a Moroccan Wool Rug
- Vacuum regularly using a suction-only head — no rotating brush roll, which can damage wool fibres
- Spot clean with cold water and mild soap (grey soap / savon beldi works best). Avoid hot water and harsh chemical cleaners
- Avoid direct sunlight — natural dyes are beautiful but can fade with prolonged UV exposure
- Trim loose threads with scissors — don't pull them. Loose threads are a natural result of handmade production
- Professional cleaning once every 1–2 years is sufficient for most households
- A new rug may shed slightly in the first few weeks — this is normal and will stop on its own
- Natural wool rugs are naturally resilient — as one of our customers discovered after a small flood in their apartment, they clean up easily and show no lasting damage
Frequently Asked Questions
Are your rugs really handmade? Yes. Every rug we sell is hand-woven on a traditional loom in Morocco. We visit the cooperatives personally and source directly from the weavers. There is no machine involvement in the production process.
How much does an authentic Moroccan rug cost? At Amana Rugs, small rugs start from around 1,500 PLN, medium rugs range from 3,500–5,000 PLN, and large format rugs from 4,500–7,000 PLN. Custom orders start from 1,000 PLN per m². This reflects the true cost of handmade production using natural materials.
Why are handmade Moroccan rugs more expensive than rugs from IKEA or online marketplaces? Mass-market "Moroccan-style" rugs are almost always machine-made from polypropylene or polyester, produced in factories in Asia. An authentic Moroccan rug is hand-woven from natural wool over several weeks by a skilled artisan. You're not buying a floor covering. You're buying a handmade object with a story and a maker.
How do I know if a Moroccan rug is authentic? Authentic rugs will have slight irregularities — uneven pile, minor asymmetries, small variations in pattern. These are signs of hand-weaving, not flaws. The back of the rug should show the individual knots. The wool should feel soft and natural, not synthetic or plasticky.
Is natural wool suitable for people with allergies? Natural wool is naturally hypoallergenic. It doesn't harbour dust mites the way synthetic fibres do, and it doesn't off-gas chemicals. Many customers with sensitivities find they tolerate wool rugs much better than synthetic alternatives. If you have specific concerns, please contact us before purchasing.
Do Moroccan wool rugs shed? New rugs may shed slightly in the first few weeks of use. This is a natural result of the hand-weaving process and loose fibres settling. It stops on its own. Regular vacuuming (suction only, no brush roll) speeds up the process.
Are these rugs durable enough for everyday use? Yes. Natural wool is one of the most durable flooring materials in existence. Our rugs are used in rental apartments, family homes with children and pets, and high-traffic hospitality spaces. As one of our customers noted after months of daily use in a rental property: they still look like new.
Can I order a rug in a custom size? Yes. We accept custom orders in any size and colourway. Contact us with your dimensions and we'll provide a quote and a production timeline. Custom pieces take approximately 10 weeks.
Do you work with interior designers and architects? Yes. We regularly work with architects, interior designers, and hospitality projects across Poland and Europe. We offer custom sizing, colour matching, multi-piece orders, and detailed product documentation for design specifications. Contact us to discuss your project. 🔗 B2B page
Where do you ship? We ship across all of Poland (3–5 business days for in-stock pieces), across Europe (contact us for a quote), and worldwide. Shipping costs are calculated at checkout.
What is your return policy? We accept returns within 14 days of delivery. Items must be unused and in original packaging. Please contact us before sending anything back.
How do I clean a Moroccan wool rug? Vacuum regularly with suction only (no brush roll). Spot clean with cold water and mild soap. Avoid hot water, steam cleaning, and harsh chemicals. Professional cleaning every 1–2 years is recommended for deep maintenance.
What makes Amana Rugs different from other Polish shops selling Moroccan rugs? We source directly from three regional cooperatives in Morocco — not through intermediaries or importers. We visit our partners personally. Each rug comes with information about the region and tradition it comes from. And we work exclusively with natural materials: wool, plant dyes, no synthetics. The relationship with our weavers is at the core of what we do.
Can I see the rugs before buying? Our primary sales are online, with shipping across Poland and Europe. If you'd like to discuss a piece in more detail before purchasing, contact us directly — we're happy to provide additional photos, videos, and texture details to help you decide.
